Urgup Guide

URGUP

Ürgüp is mainly known these days for its beautiful small hotels, many of which are in renovated cave houses and have views facing the town and the nearby cliffs. Some gorgeous old mansions that were previously owned by leading local families—including Greeks, who were a significant appearance in the area until the 1923 Greek-Turkish population change—have also been converted into hotels.

Downtown Ürgüp is a slightly tacky jumble of buildings built up often for the tourism industry, but you’ll find banks, travel agencies, money exchanges, rug and jewelry shops, and even a Turkish hammam, along with a few low-key nightlife venues. When the winter months, certain hotels and restaurants in Ürgüp close, which means slightly reduced benefits for travelers but a more tranquil atmosphere.
