CANAKKALE
On the southern coast of the Dardanelles, west of Bursa, Çanakkale is the largest city on the North Aegean coast and makes an excellent base for touring the memorials and battlegrounds of Gallipoli, a half-hour ferry journey over the straits.
The center of Çanakkale is in the docks area, and you really don't need to go inland. An Ottoman clock tower is within the two halves of the dock. Head near the sea from this tower and you'll find the ferry that departs for historic Gallipoli. Hotels and eateries are spread on either side of the docks, along the seafront. Most of the budget hotels, cheap dining choices, and bars are in the streets behind the waterfront to the left of the tower if you're facing the sea.
